FRINGE FRIENDS - Thread Painting Handbag (Black×Purple)

This pop and eye-catching bag is part of the Fringe Friends series, developed within the Upcycling Selvage Project.

The project explores the creative potential of “selvage” — the edge of fabric produced during the weaving process. These fringes are sourced from a name tag factory in the Netherlands, where their colours vary depending on each brand’s logo design. Inspired by the charm of this unique material, the project transforms textile waste into new products and artworks, celebrating its distinctive beauty in a sustainable way.

While working on other textile and fringe-based pieces, small lint and cut-off threads were collected and reimagined. These colourful threads were embedded between transparent PVC sheets and stitched together to create a new, abstract textile surface.

The handles are made from hospital tubes that were cut and never used. Coloured threads are packed inside, forming unique compressed lines that highlight their vivid character.

Each composition is intuitively arranged, resulting in one-of-a-kind expressions — like abstract paintings made of thread.
